The Commerce Department’s U.S. Census Bureau today released retail sales data for July 2010.  Retail sales rose 0.4 percent following declines in June and May.  The increase matched the expectations of private-sector analysts.  Motor vehicle sales rose 1.6 percent in July.  Sales excluding automotive dealers edged up 0.2 percent, also consistent with private-sector expectations.

“Today’s increase in retail sales shows that overall economic activity is still growing, although at a more modest pace than we would like,” Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said. “The administration understands that too many Americans continue to struggle. President Obama and this department are committed to continuing to promote policies that foster job creation and a strong and sustainable economy.”
